The USA's largest subtropical wilderness, the Everglades are home to all kinds of endangered species, including manatees and panthers. Watching the sunset over Long Pine Key Lake in the Everglades National Park is a serene color show. Alongside the beautiful drive-by scenery of Floridas luscious landscapes and its glittering Everglade waterways, Alligator Alley is a prolific wildlife hub home to intense amounts of species - and its for this reason the entire stretch is fenced off along the side to protect creatures and cars from collisions. Relax under the shade of a palm tree on the sheltered sandy beach or take a swim in the clear turquoise sea. This barrier island connected to the coastline by Miami via the Rickenbacker Causeway provides a lovely escape from big city life. It is about a two-hour boat ride west of Key West and can only be visited on a day trip.

Remote and beautiful, Dry Tortugas National Park consists of seven islands surrounded by protected coral reefs in the Gulf of Mexico. Named for the giant driftwood trees scattered along it, Boneyard Beach in Big Talbot Island State Park is a one-of-a-kind phenomenon. It is filled with buildings from the 1930s and early 1940s, built in unique and colorful Art Deco style, including the ones pictured above lining trendy Ocean Boulevard. The most beautiful beach here is North Beach, and it is especially popular with families–the water is calm enough for kids to swim in and there are some awesome colored shells and giant sand dollars to search for. The park covers five islands off the coast from Tampa Bay that are accessible by bridge. The beach at Fort DeSoto State Park has been called one of America's most beautiful for good reason. And thanks to its state park designation, the beaches here are also pristine. With varying shades of clear turquoise water set against a brilliant white-sand beach, Bahia Honda State Park is home to some of Florida's most beautiful beaches. We don't want newcomers trampling the golden egg.Miami's South Beach is the trendiest section of sand in all of Florida. And things haven't cooled off much, even with the slight rise in interest rates. For a while, in north Englewood, potential buyers bid against each other at levels above the asking price. Some houses in good, but not prime, locations have several offers the day they go on the market. And guess what? There's only so much of that land, too. People have figured if they can't get on the water, they'll get close to it. While most of the media's attention has focused on the high-end waterfront property, the cost of so-called "starter homes" and "investment properties," the type suitable for rentals, have risen with the tide. Over the past two years, the real estate market in Englewood, Port Charlotte, and Punta Gorda has been in a frenzy. People want to move here, and there's only so much land, particularly on or near the water, for them to buy. The increase reflects impact fees, more stringent codes, and a rise in the cost of wood and construction, but supply and demand has also played a major role. The same home nowadays would go for three to four times that much. In 1987, my wife and I were astounded to discover we could build a 1,600-square-foot, three-bedroom, two-bath home with cedar beams and many other extras in Englewood East for about $55,000.
